Happy New Year and thoughts on the Iowa circus...

What better way to kick off the new year than to post on the ongoing white wing circus also known as the GOP nominating contest?  After the results, here is my take:

My Piano Trio

I recognize that, in a universe where at least 80% of my friends are fellow musicians, the likelihood is pretty good that at least 1/2 (or more) of us are gigging on any given Saturday night in December. Probably 1/2 of the other 1/2 are at some seasonal family or friends event. That said, if you happen to be free, I really hope you can make it by my Piano Trio concert at Piedmont Piano Company this Saturday Night. I am joined by two of the absolute best and two of my favorite piano players in this town, Matt Clark and Grant Levin, and I have to say, it sounds pretty cool...join the fun as they "battle it out" on Steinways and Bosendorfers and Faziolis, while I play the occasional note that might be left over;=} See you there - I'll be the one playing the sax...

David Stern - pond scum

Apparently, David Stern has now torpedoed NBA fans chances of seeing Chris Paul passing to Blake Griffin, on the heels of seing Chris Paul passing to Kobe Bryant. Sad, because as far as a corporate fat cat goes, his politics are very good and he has been especially good on issues of race. However, he is, like Gingrich, all too well cast visually and oratorically as a smug corporate paternalistic fat cat, the kind of professor we all HATED in school, the kind of person you want to bitch slap as soon as you hear him speak.

the blank page

shout out to my friend and musical comrade Doug Beavers. Dioni and I heard him with Eddie Palmieri at Yoshi's last night and then he and I hung until the wee hours catching up. A mensch, that Beavers, and glad he is pursuing his muse in NYC...on another note, broke open a fresh pad of manuscript paper and wrote some music this morning.

A thought...

FWIW, I think you can make a direct correlation between the gutting of music (and art and drama) in the public schools in the past 35 years and the corresponding diminished audience for jazz...let's face it. Anyone who actually has tried to play an instrument for any length of time knows how challenging it is to get good at it. It is like baseball or basketball - try to hit a curveball or hit a 3-pointer with a hand in your face and you will be blown away at what pros can do. Same goes for jazz.
